Seaham seats

Two sets of seats were installed in Seaham in the north east coast on Friday. The finishing off and lighting will be completed in the next couple of days.

The two sets of granite seats include etched poems by local youngsters about the wind and sea. The glass is a zoetrope of waves crashing and spray splattering towards the end of the seat. People walk between the two granite/zoetrope seats towards the Primary Care Centre and animate the waves as they walk.

The two other seats are cast iron Captains chairs. The design was taken from a local shipwreck. There is a registry office diagonally opposite the Captains chairs and my hope is that bride and groom will sit here flanked by family and friends for some photographs. I hope too that planting behind the chairs masks the less romantic view of ASDA.

Massive thanks once again go to Seb Boyesen for all his excellent work on this project. Also David Proto for the animated glasswork. Thanks too to Anne Edwards and Durham County Council, Gareth Neil and Colin Robson. My thanks also to Simon Wilkins, Tom,  Martin and Glen.

Tea activated football predictor

Amazing evening light a couple of nights ago in the studio which illuminated the tea activated football predictor (tribute to Paul the predicting octopus). This is goalkeeper Gary from a crow's viewpoint.
The predictor should be ready in two months time. The contraption will sit on top of a hot pot of tea and then go about predicting the exact score of any selected match.

Burnley 3d animated zoetropes

The 3d hand cranked animated zoetropes are nearing completion ready for installation. There are 20 x 3d printed figures all in slightly different positions to create the animation when the strobe light is turned on. A magnet under each figure makes sure that the timing of the light coming on is always synced with the placement of a figure.

Massive thanks once again to Seb Boyesen.

This footage was taken on a phone and the black lines are a result of frame rates, they are not visible to the naked eye.

The 3d printed figures are housed within the white powder coated column, rotate by means of a hand crank and viewed through a viewing slot.

The virtual figures for the 3d animated zoetropes are modelled and the man pushing a trolley is now animated and ready to be made into 25 x 3d printed figures. These will then become animated under the strobe light.

film stills - WNO

I was looking for some images on an old external hard drive and came across some stills from a film I made for the Welsh National Opera during a collaboration a couple of years ago  with my brother Michael and Jessica Curry. A performance of Michael and Jessica's sound was played in front of a 22 minute film/animation. These 4 stills are from that film.

3d animated zoetropes, Burnley

The figures for the animated zoetropes are in process. There will be 25 figures for each zoetrope approx 66mm tall, each one in a slightly different position creating the animation when people hand crank the zoetropes.

The figures have been scanned, a digital figure made and amended and then 3d printed. Massive thanks once again to Seb Boyesen. An amazing man.

Original figures in appropriate outfits ready for scanning.

Man pushing trolley scanned and model tweaked ready for 3d printing.

The test figure 3d printed.

Female weaver digital model tweaked into position with a Butterworth and Dickinson loom (locally made and used). Currently being 3d printed.
